Dr Koh Chaik Ming is an experienced educator, business coach and consultant and has been assisting many Singapore SMEs with their corporate strategy. He is the Chairman of the Board of Food Bank Singapore and contributes his time and expertise on assisting Food Bank Singapore with its strategy, digitalization, supply chain and fund-raising efforts. Chaik is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Operations Research & Analytics (IORA) at the National University of Singapore to assist in the research of Singapore’s Food Supply Chain Resilience. Prior to that, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the largest Chinese platform company facilitating two million tons of frozen meat and seafood import into China (or approximately a quarter of the China’s frozen protein market share). Chaik was responsible for Asia Pacific and spearheading the Group’s new cold chain real estate development platform in China. Prior to the platform company, Chaik was the CEO of a Shanghai-headquartered logistics real estate investment company, who is also the sponsor of a SGX mainboard-listed industrial REIT. During his three-year tenure, he assisted the listed REIT to acquire assets in Wuhan, Chongqing and Jakarta, totaling more than 1.6 million sq ft. Before that, he was General Manager – Downstream New Business Development and Commercial Director at Shell China from 2012 to 2016 and Regional General Manager – Asia Pacific & Middle East for Shell Marine Products from 2008 to 2012 where he managed a US$2 billion business portfolio. Before Shell, Chaik Ming was Temasek Holdings’ (Singapore government-owned S$400b investment company) first Chief Representative for Shanghai. He was responsible for the setup and operations of their Shanghai office since May 2006. Prior to his posting in Shanghai, Chaik Ming spent six years in deal transactions and strategic portfolio development, focusing on the investments, divestments and management of companies in the transportation and logistics sector. As the cluster lead for aviation and logistics, he was responsible for strategic development of Temasek’s 3PL (third party logistics) company portfolio, including Sembcorp Logistics and Keppel Logistics. He also led the IPO investment into Airports of Thailand (AOT), executed the open tender sale of a Changi Airport ground handling and airline catering business (CIAS) to the Emirates Group (Dnata) and successfully took a significant minority stake in Air China. He was also part of the deal team that made the multi-billion-dollar pre-IPO investment into Bank of China in 2005.
Dr Koh joined the direct investment arm of Temasek Holdings in January 2000 after his INSEAD MBA. Prior to INSEAD, he spent five years in Beijing, China with the largest US privately-owned confectionery and food business, M&Ms/Mars where he built the first Pedigree / Whiskas petfood plant in China and managed the confectionery cold chain and petfood supply chain for the China and Hong Kong markets, which included 26 warehouses and regional distribution centers. Before M&Ms/Mars, he started his career as a design engineer at the opto-electronics components division of Hewlett Packard Singapore.
Dr Koh received his Doctorate of Business Administration from the Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2022. He is also an alumnus of both Harvard Business School (Advanced Management Program AMP168) and INSEAD (MBA 1999D) and holds a Graduate Diploma of Marketing (Gold Medal) from the Marketing Institute of Singapore. He also graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He has served as a board member of Senoko Power, Singapore Expo and Singapore Pools. In his personal capacity, he also contributes his time by serving as Advisory Board Member for the SMU Academy, Dunman High School and Food Bank Singapore. He served as a Member of the Finance & Investment Committee for the Singapore Chinese Orchestra for ten years. He was also an Adjunct Professor at INSEAD and guest lectures at the Tsinghua University, Singapore Management University, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore on corporate finance, mergers & acquisition, corporate governance, supply chain and business succession. He also conducts training in Mandarin in Singapore for visiting Chinese state-owned companies and government entities such as China Aerospace & Science Corporation, Hainan SASAC and is currently an Enterprise Singapore-sponsored business coach (Enterprise Leadership Transformation or ELT Program) to many Singaporean multi-generational small & medium enterprises (SMEs) to assist with their strategic capability building, business model transformation, growth capital and business succession.
