Title
How do Human and AI Interact  in Operational Environments?
Abstract 
Over the last few years, firms have been investing extensively in algorithmic and intelligent systems. This has presented a fertile ground for researchers to study  Human-AI interactions in operations and its impact on performance. In this talk,  I will present an overview of my research in this area and discuss a couple of papers and their contributions in greater details.
About the Speaker

Jayashankar Swaminathan is the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Professor of Operations at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and Professor of Statistics and Operations Research at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An internationally recognized thought leader on productivity and innovation in business operations, he is an inducted Fellow of The Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society (MSOM) and Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). He currently serves as a Department Editor for Management Science and Production and Operations Management journals. He is also the President (Elect) of POMS in 2026 and has served as Vice President of INFORMS and MSOM society and as President of the POMS College for Supply Chain Management in the past. He was listed among the Top 10 Scholar in the world in terms of publications in major operations journals (MS, MSOM, POM, JOM) from 2008-2022 and 2000-2015 as well as Top 1% of scholars worldwide in the Elsevier Stanford rankings.

He has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, George Nicholson Prize, Weatherspoon Distinguished Research, Weatherspoon Excellence in Teaching, Schwabacher Fellowship, and Roy Holsten Award for Exceptional Service. Dr. Swaminathan joined Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC as Associate Professor in 2000 where he has held many leadership roles including the Chair of the Operations area, Associate Dean for Global EMBA programs, Director of Global Business Center and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the school. Prior to joining UNC, he was an Assistant Professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He received his PhD and Master’s degree in industrial administration from GSIA (now Tepper) at Carnegie Mellon University and his Bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
