Bananas are an important source of nutrient and energy due to their high content of sugar, sucrose, fructose, glucose and fiber. It is an important crop in Indonesia due to climatic factors as well as its economic factors. The Indonesian farmers favor banana cultivation as its crop selection partly also due to the high banana prices.
In 2022, Indonesia is ranked No. 3 in global banana production with an annual production of 9.2 million tons, just after India (34.5 million tons) and China (11.7 million tons). According to the UN Comtrade data, Singapore imported 42,675 tons of bananas in 2023, of which 2,521 tons are imported from Indonesia. Indonesia is the third largest banana importer to Singapore, and it is behind Malaysia (24,209 tons) and Philippines (15,730 tons). Singapore’s average banana import price from Indonesia is US$0.70/kg, linearly to US$0.30/kg from the first place Malaysia and US$0.57/kg from the second place Philippines.
Banana Supply Chain is the most popular but vulnerable among food supply chains because bananas have great perishability and sensitivity to external factors such as time, temperature, humidity and handling in the entire supply chain including harvest, storage, transportation, ripening, distribution, retail, etc.
