DESCRIPTION:Name of Speaker\n\n\nLim Ting Hui\n\n\n\n\nSchedule \n\n\n11 Sep 2026\, 10am – 11.30am \n (60 min talk + 30 min Q&A) \n\n\n\n\nVenue \n\n\nHSS 407\n\n\n\n\nLink to register \n(via Zoom) \n\n\nhttps://nus-sg.zoom.us/meeting/register/EVVs3uXER9S6sYNArJXyqQ\n\n\n\n\nTitle\n\n\nThe Forecast Is Not the Decision\n\n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\nFor all the millions invested in ERP\, planning systems and AI\, much of supply chain still runs on Excel in a planner’s laptop\, where the final decisions are adjusted\, overridden and made. This session explores why better forecasts are not enough\, why companies can be overstocked and understocked at the same time\, and how LLMs\, data science\, uncertainty modeling and operations research are converging to move supply chain from predicting what may happen to deciding what to do when reality does not follow the plan.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nTing Hui is an alumnus of NUS Business School and co-founder and CTO of MetaLearner\, a supply-chain decision intelligence company. His work in forecasting began in the classroom with Nico and has since evolved into building new technologies that help enterprises move beyond prediction toward better operational decision-making under uncertainty. Today\, MetaLearner works with ecosystem partners including NVIDIA\, Lenovo and Ingram Micro to bring forecasting\, optimization and AI-driven decision intelligence into enterprise supply chains.

This has presented a fertile ground for researchers to study  Human-AI interactions in operations and its impact on performance. In this talk\,  I will present an overview of my research in this area and discuss a couple of papers and their contributions in greater details.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nJayashankar Swaminathan is the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Professor of Operations at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and Professor of Statistics and Operations Research at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An internationally recognized thought leader on productivity and innovation in business operations\, he is an inducted Fellow of The Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS)\, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society (MSOM) and Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). He currently serves as a Department Editor for Management Science and Production and Operations Management journals. He is also the President (Elect) of POMS in 2026 and has served as Vice President of INFORMS and MSOM society and as President of the POMS College for Supply Chain Management in the past. He was listed among the Top 10 Scholar in the world in terms of publications in major operations journals (MS\, MSOM\, POM\, JOM) from 2008-2022 and 2000-2015 as well as Top 1% of scholars worldwide in the Elsevier Stanford rankings. \n\nHe has received numerous awards for his work\, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award\, George Nicholson Prize\, Weatherspoon Distinguished Research\, Weatherspoon Excellence in Teaching\, Schwabacher Fellowship\, and Roy Holsten Award for Exceptional Service. Dr. Swaminathan joined Kenan-Flagler Business School\, UNC as Associate Professor in 2000 where he has held many leadership roles including the Chair of the Operations area\, Associate Dean for Global EMBA programs\, Director of Global Business Center and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the school. Prior to joining UNC\, he was an Assistant Professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He received his PhD and Master’s degree in industrial administration from GSIA (now Tepper) at Carnegie Mellon University and his Bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Delhi.
